This Glass Menagerie is top shelf, and while blessed with an extraordinary cast and the highest of production values, it will not meet with everyone’s measure of how this play should be staged.

Livin' the Sweet Life | Deanne SmithHailing from the comedy mecca of Montreal, Deanne Smith only started performing in 2005. It's hard to believe she hasn't been doing it for longer, as she's a tight performer with an appealingly nerdy wit and an excellent sense of language and timing. She's come a long way, baby and she's definitely Livin' the Sweet Life! Not tucked away in one of the broom closet venues of Trades Hall, Smith is killing it in the spacious Evatt room. Yes, life is pretty fine!

You get the sense with Smith that, despite her rank climbing in the comedy world, it doesn't take much for this bowtie-wearing, pixie-haired chick to appreciate the smaller things in life. The unlimited options of a weekly bus ticket, the chance to go home with a cute girl after a night out, Wikipedia on her cell phone – Smith finds joy – and a lot of laughs in simple pleasures. Yet nothing is as one-dimensional as it seems and she alludes to racism and first world guilt without ever getting preachy or dour.

Her anecdotes have good arches; her one-liners are sharp and she's not shy about showing off her excellent grasp of English grammar. Bookended by ukulele-accompanied ditties, the show traverses a range of topics – impressions of Australians (and they're not all good), porn, lesbian foreplay, embarrassing body waxing and knife-throwing antics – in a surprising and awkwardly endearing romp. Smith's banter with and connection to a mixed audience succeeds without over-extending and she flows like a pro from go to woah.

Be brave and sit in the front row and you may be the lucky recipient of her super special Sweet Life treatment.
